Bring Home the Bakken: Virtual Workshops

Bring home The Bakken Museum with take-home science kits! Choose a date and topic, pick up your kit, and get ready to learn. During the scheduled event, our educators will guide you through the hands-on experiment via Zoom video call. You'll have a chance to ask questions and connect with other individuals interested in science and innovation – all from your own home! Kit shipping is also available for a small fee.

MAGNIFICENT ELECTRIFYING ELECTROMAGNETS

Program Length: 45 minutes
Cost: $12.50, $3 per additional kit

Electricity and magnetism work together to power our daily lives. Learn about the relationship between the two forces, the scientists who discovered the relationship, and how we use electromagnetism in our daily lives. Hear the stories of HC Oersted and Michael Faraday, exciting demonstrations of their scientific discoveries, and the opportunity to build and test your own electromagnet using the materials in your pre-purchased Bakken kit.

COLOR CHEMISTRY, COOL!

Program Length: 45 minutes
Cost: $15, $4 per additional kit

Radiant reds, bright blues, and plush purples are all around us. But where do these colors come from? Learn about the history and science of natural colorants, get familiar with pH as a chemical property of substances, and explore how scientific knowledge can inform the art humans make. With their own kit of materials, students will work with a Bakken Museum educator to produce a palette of colors, which they will use to paint their own water color-style masterpiece!

Sound! What is sound? What makes a sound? How can we manipulate it? Includes an accessible primer on the physics of sound, acoustics, and the opportunity to construct a cardboard musical instrument.

MARY AND HER MONSTER

Program Length: 30 minutes
Cost: $10, $2 per additional kit

Mary Shelley was only 19 years old when she wrote Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. What was going on in her world that might have inspired her to write such a tragic story? Why is this story still so important now? Learn about Mary Shelley, her world, and her most famous creation. Includes creating a monster of one's own (plus a lot of British accents).

DETAILS

Each workshop will be hosted on Zoom in a private meeting. After registering, you will receive a link with access to the event. Each registration includes an experiment kit with all necessary materials. Kits will be available for pickup at The Bakken Museum up to five days before the workshop. Kits can also be shipped directly to your home via USPS for an additional fee of $8.50.

  • A link will be emailed to you 24 hours before the start of the event.
  • Additional kits are available for a nominal fee.
  • Household and Supporting members of The Bakken Museum receive a 10% discount. Become a member or sign-in on the registration page to save.
  • Workshops are recommended for students in grades 3-6. More senior students are welcome, and youngers may join with adult supervision.
