Native American admission
As a part of our ongoing Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) efforts, Bakken Museum staff have engaged in several conversations regarding the creation of a land acknowledgment. We are grateful for the resources provided by the Native Governance Center. These resources have helped us shape our internal conversations and explore our relationships with local Native communities, our intentions around a land acknowledgment, and identify other actions that could have a tangible impact.
While we are still working with these questions and growing our understanding, one suggestion that emerged was to offer free admission to visitors who identify as Native American in acknowledgment that The Bakken Museum resides on Dakota land. The Bakken Museum is located on the shores of Bde Maka Ska (White Sands Lake). Bde Maka Ska is the Dakota name for the lake that has been passed down in oral history. Free Native American Admission is a facet of the ongoing efforts we are taking as a part of our learning about ways to honor and respect our local Native communities.
To receive free Native American Admission, please speak to a staff member at the visitor services desk, email us at info@thebakken.org, or call us at 612-926-3878.
