Classroom Workshops

Bringing science experiences to your classroom

Let us WOW you with science, technology, engineering, and math as Bakken Educators bring exciting experiences right into your schoolroom.

30-MINUTE WORKSHOPS

LIGHTS ON: EXPLORING ELECTRICITY FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD

AGES 3-5: Help Moby the Mouse find her way when all the lights go out! Beyond this story, groups will get a chance to learn a song, play a game, and experiment with circuits specially designed to help young explorers make connections of their own.

COST: $150 first program, $80 each additional on the same day

BITTY BEES:a Bees Code for Early Learners

AGES 4-6: The short version of our intro to coding class is intended for young innovators. Bobby B. is a very busy honey bee who has a lot to do and needs some help! This whimsical and very hands-on program is not only a fun way to learn about how important bees are to us as pollinators but also a great introduction to concepts in coding, measurement, and creative problem solving as a group, laying the important groundwork for more complicated STEM concepts students will encounter in their future learning.

COST: $180 first program, $90 each additional on the same day

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW? THE SCIENCE OF SOUND

GRADES K-1: Students will learn about sound vibrations and how they travel through different mediums. This interactive workshop will use hands-on learning to entertain and educate students about the science of sound.

COST: $180 first program, $90 each additional on the same day

MINI-MAGNETS

GRADES K-2: While designed for students who are just beginning their exploration of magnetism, this program can be interesting and fun for any student working to discover what magnets have to offer. Our educator will take students through concepts such as attract & repel and magnetic poles using experiments, games, and demonstrations sure to pull all types of learners into the fun.

COST: $150 first program, $80 each additional on the same day

SIMPLE STATIC

GRADES K-2: Through a series of demonstrations and interactive experiments, a Bakken educator will provide younger students a hands-on introduction to basic ideas about static electricity while revealing to them how the practice of science can be exciting, surprising, and fun!

*Due to challenges presented by humidity, we do not offer this program from May-Sept.

COST: $150 first program, $80 each additional on the same day

45-60 MINUTE WORKSHOPS

A BEE’S CODE

GRADES K-2: Bobby B. is a very busy honey bee who has a lot to do and needs some help! This whimsical and very hands-on program is not only a fun way to learn about how important bees are to us as pollinators but also a great introduction to concepts in coding, measurement, and creative problem solving as a group, laying the important groundwork for more complicated STEM concepts students will encounter in their future learning.

COST: $220 first program, $120 each additional on the same day

BATTERIES, BULBS, AND WIRES

GRADES 1-3 OR 4-6: After a simple primer on circuits, students get a giant pile of—you guessed it—batteries, lightbulbs, wires, and fun gadgets. The challenge? to build anything and everything from the simplest of circuits to complex creations. Easily scalable for any level, this is the perfect blend of circuitry and inquiry to leave students wired for discovery.

COST: $220 first program, $120 each additional on the same day

FEEL THE FORCE

GRADES K-2: A full hour of discovery and exploration of forces that can attract and repel younger groups to experience electricity and magnetism. Students will be wowed by some of our most popular static electricity experiments and demonstrations and engage in small group inquiry and games with magnets.

*Due to challenges presented by humidity, we do not offer this program from May-Sept.

COST: $220 first program, $120 each additional on the same day

COLOR ME CURIOUS

GRADES 3-5: Radiant reds, bright blues, and plush purples are all around us. But where do these colors come from? In this 60-minute workshop, learn about the history and science of natural colorants, familiarize yourself with pH as a chemical property of substances, and explore how scientific knowledge can inform human art. Using colorants and chemical solutions, students will produce a beautiful palette of colors that they will use to create their water color masterpiece.

COST: $240 first program, $140 each additional on the same day

STATIC ELECTRICITY

GRADES 3-6: A Bakken instructor will lead your students through a number of experiments where they will get to experience static electricity first hand. This engaging and energizing presentation has a hands-on focus allowing students to learn about electricity by experiencing its effects, asking questions, and creating their own experiments to try, leaving the students excited to learn more about science.

*Due to challenges presented by humidity, we do not offer this program from May-Sept.

COST: $220 first program, $120 each additional on the same day

NANO, NANO: THE SCIENCE OF THE SMALL

GRADES 3-6: The nano world may be tiny, but it still wows students as they discover the differences in how small objects behave and explore ideas behind some of today's cutting-edge science. Students see demos and try group-based experiments to reveal some small discoveries with big implications.

COST: $240 first program, $140 each additional on the same day

Magnets and Electricity

GRADES 3-6: Students will discover the interaction between magnetism and electricity through hands-on experiments and demonstrations. This entertaining workshop allows students an opportunity to explore a robust collection of magnets and magnetic forces as well as the mechanics and use of electromagnets. Bakken educators will introduce participants to current-day innovators who are still discovering new ways to understand magnets and electricity today.

COST: $220 first program, $120 each additional on the same day

FROGS, VOLTS, AND VINEGAR: ENGINEERING ELECTRICITY FROM PAST TO PRESENT

GRADES 4-8: Alessandro Volta may have invented the battery over 200 years ago, but his invention is just as useful today and still provides some very entertaining experiments. Through his story, students experiment with batteries to power simple devices and explore the innovation process for themselves.

COST: $240 first program, $140 each additional on the same day
