When school is out, the fun is in at The Bakken Museum. Join us in the Makerspace over spring break as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein with these special camps and activities.

March 26th - 29th

RoboCreature

Creature Camp

Join us for a week in the "laboratory" and bring your ideas to life using the Bakken Museum Innovation Process! Aspiring scientist will design, build, and refine a creature, then share  it at the Creature Convention at the end of the week. Play games, exercise the brain with puzzles and challenges, and make friends with your fellow mad scientists.

Recommended for students in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.

Camp Dates

Monday March 26th -  Thursday March 29th

  • 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • Drop Off from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m.

  • Pick Up from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Mad Scientist

Mad Scientist Sampler

Practice responsible innovation and experiment with technology, code, and creativity in the Makerspace with activities inspired by Mary Shelley's science fiction classic. Each day has a different theme and a different take home project. Join us for one or sign up for them all!

Recommended for students in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.

Morning Sessions are 9 a.m. to noon, Afternoon Sessions are 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Learn the fundamentals of coding by programming your own theme song with a Basic Stamp microcontroller.

Automaton

Create your own moving creation using cams and creativity to mimic life.

Optical Illusions

Explore the psychology of optical illusions, like pardidolia and make a self-portrait out of unexpected materials.

Masks

Create your own mask to hide or celebrate with using the tools and material in our makerspace!


April 4th - A.M. Session

Circuit Extravaganza

Batteries, bulbs, and wires oh my! Build your own circuit experiment board.

April 4th - P.M. Session

Light-Up Creatures

Put your circuit knowledge to use by constructing your own light up creature.


April 5th - A.M. Session

Drawing with Code

Learn the basic of coding while drawing basic shapes and patterns with Scratch.

April 5th- P.M. Session

Drawbots

Use technology to enhance your creativity by building a drawing machine.


April 6th - A.M. Session

Secret Messages

Practice the art and science behind cryptographic techniques and build your own encryption device.

Hand Made Hands

What would you do with an extra hand? Build one and find out!

Details

What to bring

  • A nutritious and delicious lunch (only if you are staying for the full day).
  • A refillable water bottle.
  • A snack (we will provide, a serving of popcorn or crackers, but if you have any allergies concerns or an especially hungry child, you might want to pack a snack).
  • Comfortable clothes that can get dirty.
  • Closed toed shoes (we work with some heavy, hot, or sharp items in the workshop). We strive to send kids home with as many toes as they came with.

  • Creature Camp: $300 per week
  • Mad Scientist Sampler: $40 per session

Creature Camp March 26- 29

  • Camp runs from 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m.
  • Drop off: 8:30 - 9:00 a.m.
  • Pick Up: 4:00 - 4:30 p.m. 

Mad Scientist Sampler Camp April 2-6

  • Morning sessions 9:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m.
  • Lunch 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. (for all day campers)
  • Afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Drop off: 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. & 12:30 - 1:00 p.m.
  • Pick Up: 12:00 - 12:30 p.m. & 4:00 - 4:30 p.m.
