The Bakken Museum Supporting Distance Learners with In-Person Program
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Bakken Museum is offering in-person support for families with students enrolled in distance learning. In response to COVID-19, The Bakken Museum’s education and outreach teams have pivoted their focus to offer digital education and increased safety precautions for in-person programs.
The Bakken Museum Clubhouse begins November 18. Students in grades 3 through 8 will attend from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. one day a week for four weeks. In addition to assistance with the students’ school curriculum, participants will get to play games and try out STEM-themed activities. Families can register for the weekday that best works with their schedule or by the theme of most interest to their child. Wednesday programming will focus on chemistry, while Thursday classes will feature the science tricks and engineering challenges.
“We recognized that the museum had a unique opportunity to support parents and students during this overwhelming time,” said The Bakken Museum Associate Director of Education, Justin Spencer. “The Bakken Museum Clubhouse is a way for students to continue to learn remotely while safely connecting with their peers. The program also provides a much-needed break for parents who are balancing work, home life, and managing their children’s courses.”
The safety of students, visitors, and staff is of the utmost importance to The Bakken Museum. Class sizes have been limited to 10 students with two educators. All students are required to wear masks, and handwashing stations are available in each education area. Room layouts have been adjusted to allow for social distancing. Students will receive their own set of materials for STEM activities, and all shared surfaces are disinfected regularly.
The Bakken Museum Clubhouse costs $300 per session. Household Members (thebakken.org/membership) of the museum receive a 10 percent discount on registration. Registration for the clubhouse is eligible for Dependent Care FSA (DCFSA) pre-tax spending. The Bakken Museum offers income-based scholarships for all youth education programs (thebakken.org/youth-program-scholarships).
