SCIENCE ACTIVITIES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Explore the innovation process and learn about science, technology, engineering, art, and math! Each activity includes a step-by-step guide and our expert staff is always on hand to help - no prior knowledge required! Science Studio is included in the cost of admission and activities change regularly.

Activities

What a Drag, Man! Drag is a force that acts parallel and in the same direction as the airflow. The drag coefficient of a bicycle impacts the way a cyclist, for example, passes through the surrounding air. Aerodynamic drag increases with the square of speed; therefore, it becomes critically important at higher speeds. Reorganize this model of a peloton so that you can obtain the lowest drag coefficient possible.

Heart Race Get your blood pumping with this heart-racing challenge. You will perform shuttle runs to various colors as a partner reads them in random order off of a card. Check your pulse before attempting this challenge and then once again afterward. How much did your pulse increase by once you completed the challenge? Try this against a friend to make things even more competitive!

Woah, Speed Racer! Pump the breaks, because you are going downhill way too fast! If you go too fast, you will definitely lose control. See if you can modify the race track so that the ball descends the slope as slowly as possible. Use the timer to check your speed. Can you get the ball to descend in 15 seconds or more?

Balloon Car The future is now, and it’s up to us to create cars that are powered by the wind instead of gasoline. Construct your vehicle so that it can utilize the windy outflow from a balloon to propel it forward. How far can your car go using only the air from a balloon? See if you can set the all-time record for a balloon-powered car!
