Computational Literacy Specialist

POSITION OVERVIEW: 

The Bakken Museum has the opportunity to develop a new suite of programs that target lower elementary (Grades K-2) computational literacy learning in greater Minnesota. The Computational Literacy specialist will teach existing offsite computational literacy programs, assist in developing more extensive computational literacy programs, and support other existing education programs as needed. This is a school contract and will end at the end of May 2026, with the potential for additional summer and school year contracts to be negotiated in the future.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Onsite Education Programs Support – 20%

  • Delivers education programs including setting-up, teaching/performing, cleaning-up, and working with students, parents, teachers, and volunteers.

  • Assist with Public Programs or events as needed.

Outreach Programs Support – 40%

  • Delivers education programs including setting-up, teaching, cleaning-up, and working with students, parents, teachers, and volunteers during and classroom workshops.

  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities specific to individual programs and work plans, as agreed upon with supervisor. 

Computer Literacy Support – 40%

  • Creates/supports creation of offsite programs that support computational literacy learning for lower elementary.

  • Evaluates current computational literacy programming.

  • Provides information and resources to other staff on best practices in computational literacy teaching.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Experience teaching, supervising, and/or working with K-5 youth in a formal or informal educational setting.

  • Experience with CS-specific curriculum for K-5 youth.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • A valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to sit and/or stand for up to 8 hours per shift.

  • Ability to move through and access all areas of the buildings and grounds including stairs, indoor and outdoor areas, and small spaces.

  • Ability to manipulate computers, office equipment, folding chairs and tables, and similar items related to an office environment.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to drive a museum vehicle.

TRAVEL:

This position requires regular travel throughout the metro, occasional day trips within greater Minnesota, and occasional 1-2 night trips through greater Minnesota.
