Discovery Days: Science in the Shadows

  • The Bakken Museum 3537 Zenith Avenue South Minneapolis, MN, 55416 United States (map)

Please note this event has passed.

Join us for a Halloween-themed Discovery Day! Take a step into the shadows and uncover science you rarely see.

Discovery Days at The Bakken Museum feature hands-on activity stations that are included in the price of admission. Purchase tickets online in advance or drop in for the fun.

Activities include:

  • Meet real-life scientists from the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering and the Minnesota Microscopy Society.

  • Phosphorescence is a process in which energy absorbed by a substance is released relatively slowly in the form of light. You can see the effect of this in many glow in the dark products. Use phosphorescent paper to make glowing art!

  • Use our special recipe of invisible ink to write a secret message.

  • Our other senses become stronger when one is compromised. Use your ears, nose, and sense of touch to guess what various items are. No peeking!

  • People have used shadow science for thousands of years to help tell time using sundials. Make your own sundial to see how they work.

  • Otters use their whiskers to feel for clams and rocks in cloudy water. Can you use a similar tool to pick up items in our pretend pond?

This event is ideal for children ages 5 to 14 plus their friends and families.
